- : OmegaComm BBS :
- : DownLoadable users manual :
- +------------------------------+
-
- This file is available for download as Manual.Zip.
-
- OmeaComm was designed to be a simple yet powerful BBS system. It takes
- the menu approach and yields a simple look. Unlike other systems that
- utilize one Huge MENU this system has many menus that follow a logical
- course. The following is a users Manual that educates the user in the
- operation of the BBS without having to spend loads of time OnLine trying
- to figure out how the darn thing works. I've tried to keep it simple and
- yet detailed enough so that the user can get the full impact of what the
- BBS can do.
-
- Making the call and Logging On take on the usual appearance but it's
- the overall look and feel that differs from other systems.
-
- Accessable from tha Main Menu are:
-
- - The Message center menu
- - The File Section menu
- - The DOORS menu
- - The Bulletin menu
- - Change user data
- - Page the Sysop
- - Log of users
- - A list of Users names
- - Review the Welcome screens and Rules
- screen.
- - Good bye (Loggoff)
- - Plus any commands for additional
- programs added in door mode like...
- . a BBS listing program
- . Net mail system
- etc...etc....
-
- The screens
- -----------
-
- While a menu is writing to your screen, it is NOT abortable. Some
- BBS systems allow the user to abort or stop the display of a particular
- screen by pressing the <ENTER> or <SPACE BAR> while the screen is writing
- to the terminal screen. OmegaComm does Not allow this as of yet. All
- menus are such screens and can't be aborted. You can avoid getting full
- screens by changing the EXPERT field in the user file (SEE Change user
- data) to TRUE. This will give you an abreiviated screen with just a list
- of the commands on it.
-
- Bulletin Menu
- -------------
- The bulletin menu is a list of text files that usually explains to the
- user some of the features of the system that the Sysop (SYStem OPerator)
- want his users to know. When the screen is displayed, select the number
- that coresponds with the desired bulletin and it will be displayed screen
- by screen. This is where the sysop tell his users about his system and lets
- them know of changes etc.
-
- Message Menu
- ------------
- The message center is where you can send messages to other users or the
- sysop. The following is a summary of the commands offered.
-
- Message Center
- --------------
- A) read <ALL> messages
- E) <ENTER> a message
- F) read a message <FROM> a user
- N) read <NEW> messages
- S) read messages by <TOPICS>
- R) Review message <HEADERS>
- T) read messages sent <TO> a user
- U) ASCII <UPLOAD> a message
- V) View messages bu <SUBJECT>
-
-
-
- ***-------------------------***
-
- A) read <ALL> messages
-
- This allows you to read ALL public messages and
- and messages to you or from you beginning with the
- number of a message you select.
-
- E) <ENTER> a message
-
- Allows you to enter a new message to be sent to a user you
- specify. It will prompt you for the name of the user to whom
- it is to go. If you are unsure you may type '?' at that prompt
- and it will give you a list of possible user names. It will
- also prompt you for the subject of the message. This is just
- a brief title of 14 char. in length.(eg: New User or HELLO or
- About the Game etc...etc). It will also prompt you for a Section
- or Category in which the message is to be stored. A '?' at that
- prompt will also give you a list of possible sections. Select
- the section and select whether it is to be Private or not and
- then begin typing the message. The text processor part will
- react badly when you use your arrow keys. If you make a mistake
- you have to back space to that point and retype from there. OR
- continue and when you are finished with the message hit <ENTER>
- a couple of times and select the apropriate action. A)bort,
- C)ontinue composition,D)elete line, E)dit line,S)ave message
- are just some of the commands available at that point. DO NOT
- USE THE ARROW KEYS !!! It's not a full screen editor!
-
- F) read messages <FROM> a user
-
- This allows users to read Public messages to ALL or private
- messages to you FROM a particular user. Again if you need a
- list of possible users type a '?' and it will begin listing them.
-
- N) read <NEW> messages
-
- This feature allows you to read the messages that have been
- entered since the last time you read messages.
-
- S) read messages by <TOPICS>
-
- This will let you read messages by the Topic of the message.
- The TOPIC is the CATEGORY or SUB that the message falls in to.
- This way you can see messages that fall into a particular
- category. The BBS will prompt you for the TOPIC. A list will
- be provided at the proper time.
-
- R) review message headers
-
- The header is the Block of information that tells you who wrote
- the message, to whom it is Written, the Subject, Date, & Time it
- was written. This is a good way to scan the messages so that you
- don't have to READ entire messages just to review some info that
- someone wrote to you earlier about or to see the info on a new BBS
- or something.
-
- T) read messages <TO> a user
-
- Allows you to read messages written TO a user specified by you.
- Again, a '?' at the What user prompt will get you a list of possible
- candidates. Of course you can only read those messages that are
- Public, or from YOU.
-
- U) ASCII <UPLOAD> a message
-
- This is used when you have a prepared message like a FOR SALE AD
- or something that has already been pretyped as a file. This
- feature is available in the E) enter a message function also.
- When the screen shows that it's ready for you to start typing,
- initiate the Upload command on your Terminal Program and select
- ASCII protocol and upload the apropriate pretyped message. The
- file contents will go directly into the message file as usual.
- Beware! There is a 40 line 75char/line limit!
-
- V) View messages by <SUBJECT>
-
- This is similar to the View messages by TOPIC except that it is
- looking for the Subject of the message. This is the part that
- the user typed in at the time he/she entered it. It requires a
- perfect match on the subject too so is of limited help at times.
-
-
- The FILES SECTION
- -----------------
-
- The file section is divided up into sysop defined categories like
- most BBS's. The file menu has the following standard commands
- available.
-
- U)pload a file
- D)ownload a file
- F)ile listings
- N)ew file scan
- S)earch for a file
- V)iew archive contents
- G)oodbye (loggoff)
-
-
-
- U)pload a file
-
- This allow you to send a file to the BBS. It prompts you first for
- the Protocol (file transfer method). It will give you a list of
- accepted protocols from which you must chose one. It also displays
- what your current Upload/Download statistics are (for your
- information). After you make your protocol selection it will prompt
- you for the name of the file you wish to Upload. If you chose a Batch
- protocol, you will be allowed upto 3 files in the batch. Just follow
- the directions that the system gives you. When OmegaComm says that
- Upload of <filesnam> is aproved, initiate the Upload function on your
- terminal program and the transfer will begin.
-
- D)ownload a file
-
- This allows you to recieve a file from the BBS. First it will prompt
- you for the Protocol then the file name(s) (upto 3 files if a batch
- protocol is selected). When OmegaComm says that Download of <filename>
- is ready, initiate the Download function on your terminal program and
- the transfer will begin.
-
- F)ile listings
-
- This one allows you to see the file listings. It will show you a
- list of the possible file sections from which you must choose one.
- It will list the files in that section page at a time. Files are
- listed by Name, Size, Date, & Description. When viewing any of the
- file listings, you wish to Download one of the files, type 'D' and
- OmegaComm will again ask for the Protocol and file name like in the
- Upload & Download commands.
-
- N)ew files scan
-
- This allows you to scan the file section for files that may have
- been added either since the last time you were on or by date.
- After you type 'N', the choices are either S)ince last on or D)ate.
- By typing 'D' it allows you to select a date. I will then show you
- all the files, category by category, that were added or whose
- description was changed since that date.
-
- V)iew archive contents
-
- Since the files on BBSs are compressed and contain many files (incl.
- documentation files) it may be nice to see what files are in a
- particular archive. Typing 'V' will get you a sub program that allow
- you to peer into the archive and see how many files are there and the
- names of the files too. You will now be able to T)est the integrety
- of the archive, V)iew achived files (names etc), R)ead a text file
- within the archive, E)xtract & download a particular file from within
- the archive, D)ownload the archive. Very useful features here!
-
- S)earch for a file
-
- If you're looking to see if a particular file is on the board or not
- you can use this command to search for it. Type in the name of the
- file at the prompt and it will let you know if it is there or not.
- This is useful to keep you from Uploading a file that is already there.
-
- G)oodbye
-
- This, of course, initiates the sign off sequence and gives you a
- chance to leave a comment to the sysop if you want then signs you
- off and hangs up.
-

-
-
- Change user data

-
- You are allowed to change certain parts of you user file. The

- you wish to change and select the change you want and press <ENTER>.
- The Prompt Bell ON gives you a beep on your speaker at every prompt.
- Item 7 allows you to select the code you need to clear your screen.
- OmegaComm will set this for you initially but if you have problems you
- may change it. If you want the screen to scroll instead of page then
- select no clear screen code. Item 8 allows you to change your screen type
- (MONO, COLOR, or ANSI Graphics). Select ANSI Graphics if your terminal
- has ANSI Emmulation or if you have ANSI.SYS installed in you Config.sys
- file (See DOS manual for info). Item 9 will determine if you get
- abbreviated menus or not. Make Expert Status TRUE and you'll get just
- a quick list of commands not full screen menus. Item 10 will enable or
- disable Hotkeys. With Hotkeys ON you just have to enter the letter
- of the command with out hitting the <ENTER> key. With Hotkeys Off you
- must press the <ENTER> key after each command.
-
-
-
-
-
- DOORS
- -----
- The DOORS section is a section where there are games and other programs
- that you can run or play from your computer while you're Online. You
- will be shown a screen that lists the possible selections. Enter the
- number that is associated with the selection you want and the game or
- program will load and run on the Host's system and let you control it.
- There are some great games available Online.
-
- There are other doors other thatn the ones in the door section. These
- are external programs that the sysop has added to the BBS like a BBS
- list or an Echomail system. They are all handle as doors or windows
- to external applications.
-
-
-
- User listing
- ------------
- This command lets you see a list of registered users. No other
- information is shown except The user number and name. No personal
- info is given out.
-
-
- Log of callers
- --------------
- This one gives you a list of all the calls the BBS has recieved since
- the sysop reset it last. Usually the log is reset each day. This is
- a good way to see how popular the board is or to see if one of your
- friends has called today.
-
- Welcome info review
- -------------------
- This one lets you review the opening screens again to see the rules
- again or whatever.
-
- Page the sysop
- --------------
- If the sysop has the Page set ON you can set off the beeper in his
- computer signalling him that you wish to talk to him. If he fails
- to answer, It will notify you and ask if you wish to leave him a
- message. If the sysop has the Page set OFF then it will tell you
- that he is not available then ask you to leave him a message.
-
-
-
- External Programs
- -----------------
- Any command on either the main menu or the file menu that begins
- with a number is an external program installed by the sysop to
- enhance his system. These are accessible by typing the number.
- These programs may include a BBSlist program or a Questionaire
- program or some other interesting thing.
-
-
-
-
-
-
- note: This was written in the hope of helping the user who hasn't
- ever seen OmegaComm before get an idea how to get around and
- operate it properly. I'd apreciate any comments you have on
- this manual. This is manual version 2.0
